Antes de dedicarte de lleno a los deportes trabajabas como modelo, una profesión que exige prestarle mucha atención al cuerpo. ¿Cómo te cuidabas en ese momento?

Gimnasia hice toda mi vida, pero cuando empecé a trabajar como modelo, iba cuando podía porque trabajaba mucho. También me encantaba practicar danza jazz, pero la verdad es que no era muy constante porque en ese momento la profesión de modelo te absorbía. No era como ahora que hay como 500 modelos que son conocidas. En ese momento eramos muy pocas y trabajábamos todo el día, por lo que no teníamos mucho tiempo para dedicarnos a nosotras.

¿Cómo fue tu experiencia de haber participado en el programa de televisión 360, haciendo algo impensado hasta ese momento para una mujer?

En 1991, cuando empecé a trabajar en 360, viajábamos por todo lados a la vez que practicábamos todo tipo de deportes no convencionales. Fue algo novedoso para la televisión, especialmente porque no existían programas de ese tipo, y menos donde la que sufría y se lanzaba a la aventura era una mujer. No había tanta difusión de todo esto. Me acuerdo que cuando empecé a correr en cosas combinadas, ibamos a diferentes lugares donde se hacían las carreras y no había infraestructura. Cargábamos en la camioneta todo lo que necesitábamos e ibamos al lugar.

¿Te costó abrirte paso entre los hombres?

No. Yo venía en ese momento de ser modelo y no podían creer lo que estaba haciendo en el sentido de dedicarme de lleno a los deportes no convencionales. Siempre hubo muy buena onda con todos. Me enseñaban lo que no sabía. Siempre estaban dispuestos a ayudarme.

De todos los deportes que practicaste en tu vida, ¿cuál es el que te ha dado mayores satisfacciones?

Siempre dije que el windsurf es uno de los deportes que más me gustan. Me encanta disfrutar los días de viento y navegar al ras del agua. La sensación es alucinante.

¿Cuándo empezaste a practicar este deporte?

En realidad fue el primer deporte que empecé a practicar. Tenía 27 años. Yo venía de trabajar mucho como modelo, por lo que no tenía tiempo para nada. Después que nació Catalina, que hoy tiene 19, me tomé un impasse en el trabajo, entre otras cosas para dedicarme a mi hija. Ahí surgió la oportunidad de empezar a navegar. Me llevaba la gorda, la dejaba en la costa con una amiga, navegaba un rato y volvía para darle la teta y volver a navegar un rato más.

¿Cómo fue que te acercaste al windsurf ?

Una amiga mía, que en ese momento practicaba y corría regatas, me incentivo para que empezara con el windsurf. Me costó muchísimo aprender. Estuve un mes para poder levantar la vela. Seguí adelante porque tengo mucha fuerza de voluntad. Justo me tocaron malas condiciones climáticas, por lo que en ese momento aprender fue algo desastroso. Una vez que aprendí, empecé a correr regatas. Tuve que aprender y mejorar si o si porque sino me quedaba última en todas las regatas.

Me fui entusiasmando cada vez más con el windsurf, compitiendo primero a nivel nacional y después representando a la Argentina en diferentes Torneos. En un momento llegué a ser la única mujer que competía a nivel olímpico. Era una situación un tanto rara, porque acá tenía que entrenarme junto con todos los hombres.

¿Sentías presiones por el hecho de ser la única mujer que representara al país?

No. Cuando yo empecé había otra chica en tabla redonda , que luego de un tiempo abandonó el deporte. Cuando surgió la categoría Mistral, se acercaron un poco más de mujeres. En 1991, empecé a trabajar en un programa de televisión, que me ocupaba mucho tiempo por lo que tuve que dejar el windsurf. Pero ocho años más tarde volví a mi querido deporte. Y volví con todo, porque en ese momento mi meta era llegar a los Juegos Olimpicos de Sydney. Tenía la esperanza de poder viajar, más que nada por el hecho de que haya allí una mujer representando a la Argentina compitiendo. Acababa de llegar de Francia donde había salido segunda en el Mundial Master.

Luego vino el mundial en Mar del Plata, donde me fue bastante mal. Por un tema de internas no me dejaron viajar a Sydney. Ese fue uno de los momentos más frustrantes que viví en el windsurf.

Has practicado todo tipo de deportes en tu vida, ¿qué deporte no volverías a practicar en tu vida ni aunque te pagaran una fortuna por hacerlo?

Bungee Jumping. Me tiré de una grúa en San Francisco. Abajo estaba la calle. No me gusta ese tipo de adrenalina tan extrema. La sensación era que te estabas tirando a suicidarte. Me pareció desastroso y nunca más en mi vida lo volvería a hacer.

¿Cómo se toma tu familia el hecho de que hagas tantos deportes?, ¿te siguen tus hijas?

A mis hijas también les gustan los deportes. Las dos más grandes lo vivieron desde que nacieron el hecho de verme haciendo de todo. Lo toman como algo natural. Cuando estaba embarazada de Angie –que ahora tiene 17- seguía corriendo regatas hasta el sexto mes de embarazo. Sol, la más chiquita, que tiene cuatro años, en el 2000 viajó conmigo a Nueva Zelanda, donde corrí el Expo Challenger. Lo único que traté de no hacer jamás es decirles una y otra vez que practicaran deportes. Quería que si hicieran algún deporte era porque ellas habían tomado la decisión de hacerlo.

¿Cómo te organizas para hacer tus cosas, siendo mamá de tres chicas y esposa?

Me organizó mucho según los horarios de ellos. Me preocupo mucho por mis hijas, más ahora por la situación del país y todo el tema de la inseguridad que está latente. A mi hija del medio, que tiene 17, la cuido bastante, por poco más que a la de cuatro. No la dejo ir sola a ningún lado.

En este momento mis hijas están de vacaciones. A la más chiquita la traigo cuando vengo a la tarde al gimnasio y la dejo en la guardería que tiene. Cuando las chicas van al colegio, aprovecho para entrenar. Angeles va al colegio doble turno. La llevo a la mañana y ahí aprovecho que la más chiquita duerme para salir a correr. Al mediodía almorzamos juntas, y cuando la llevo al jardín aprovecho para seguir entrenando.

¿Por qué no estás a favor de incentivar a los hijos en los deportes?

Nunca quise sugerir nada con el tema, porque yo lo viví en carne propia de chica. Nací en una casa de deportistas. Me inculcaron tanto que hiciera deportes, que no hacía nada por el hecho de llevarles la contra a mis padres. Todos practicaban deportes, menos yo. Mi papá, fundador del SIC (el club de rugby San Isidro Club), siempre me llevaba a los partidos de rugby. Mi mamá jugaba al tenis y al golf. Siempre me decían para que vaya a jugar al tenis con ellos, pero yo no quería saber nada del tema. Me anotaban en los campeonatos de natación del club y yo me escondía en el vestuario para no salir. Era solo espectadora y alentadora de deportes.

Qué paradoja, es increíble…

Mi hermano siempre me carga y me dice: ” de vieja sos deportista. Nunca quisiste hacer nada. Ahora todos me dicen tu hermana, la deportista y yo me indigno”.`

Yo creo que si a un chico se lo presiona mucho para que haga un deporte después les agarra la rebelión y no lo quieren hacer a propósito.

¿Te quedó alguna cuenta pendiente con respecto al deporte?

En realidad soy bastante privilegiada porque pude hacer de todo. Estuve compitiendo en windsurf, corrí dos Eco Challenger -disciplina combinada de varios deportes donde se recorren en equipo cerca de 500 kilómetros- y los terminé a ambos. Hay mucha gente que los corre y no termina nunca. Hay equipos que hay corrido 4,5 veces y no los han terminado nunca. Pude practicar todo lo que quise. Lo único que me quedó por practicar es el Boxlet, deporte que se corre en los juegos olímpicos de invierno. Es como un trineo, donde uno se lanza por una especie de túnel. Cuando trabajaba en 360, hicimos un viaje especial a Saint Moritz para practicar ese deporte. Cuando llegamos nos avisaron que el día anterior habían roto la pista porque hacía una semana que estaba haciendo calor, lo cual era peligroso por el tema de que el hielo se derrite. Otro deporte que me encantaría aprender es el snowboard. Nunca que fui se me dieron las condiciones para aprenderlo, ya que cada vez que iba estaba con toda mi familia, y el hecho de aprender snowboard implicaba alejarme de ellos para ir a practicarlo a otro lado.

¿Qué papel cumple la alimentación en tu vida?

Cuando haces deportes, si no comes bien, vos misma te das cuenta que no rendís. Yo antes fumaba. Empecé a hacer deportes y tuve que dejar.

¿Dormís por lo menos ocho horas por día?

No, nunca. Jamás. Con chicos que van al colegio eso es imposible. Me acuesto alrededor de las 12:30, y a la 6:00 ya me estoy levantando. Es muy difícil que duerma ocho horas por día.

A nivel laboral, ¿en qué andás?

Buscando trabajo (risas). Buscando algo nuevo para hacer. Siempre tengo en mi mente, el hecho de poder llegar a hacer algún día un programa bueno de deportes.

¿Qué consejo le darías a alguien que quiere empezar a hacer deportes y no se termina de decidir?

Te cambia un montón la vida el hecho de empezar a practicar un deporte. Te cambia el espíritu. A mi siempre me gustó mucho estar en contacto con la naturaleza. El deporte te da eso. Por ahí nada más que el hecho de salir a correr o a andar en bicicleta, te hace disfrutar de otra manera las cosas.
